Results september 2014
all pixels modeled using the PAN solution
which only uses Coastal, Blue, Green and PAN

download results september 2014 (323 MB) from my GoogleDrive
Apart from optical calibration details, results include the following
  • princesscayswv_sept2014_WCC.tif.bz2  (55 MB)
    • Three U8 channels spectral TOA water column corrected radiance
      • for bands Coastal, Bleu and Green
      • these are the only three bands used for bottom typing

TCC TOA (Blue, Green and Red)
linear enhancement is identical for comparison

Conclusions
We have been tackling the limits of the 4SM method.
The colorful and variable spectral riches of the underwaterworld do not surrender easily.
No further "tweaking" shall ever make 4SM
into a perfect solution for a problem which is only half informed:
more bands are needed
narrower wavebands
better S/N ratio for marine areas
more secure imaging geometries
less glint
better pre-processing
etc

At least, 4SM can give a good estimate of prevailing spectral 2K
for the clearest water bodies in the image.

Then, just think of it: NoNeed for atmospheric corrections

Then, just think of it: SameDay service, using just a Linux laptop
Once calibration is secured, processing of this image is done in 30 mn on my laptop.

The use of spectral libraries
is obviously the best way to make reasonable assumptions
on the spectral properties of the bottom for deriving bottom depth:
too bad the underwater world lives and changes with the season.
Collecting suitable exhaustive spectral libraries
to suit a location on a given date at a given ground resolution
is quite an undertaking.
And they are unlikely to be portable elsewhere...
