Average bottom brightness
image B
  • VERY DARK: one can see that the green-purple-black hues signal
    • severe water turbidity
    • and therefore severe depth underestimation
    • off Mayaguez and at La Parguera Marine Reserve
  • BRIGHT: pink hues are rendered where
    • bottom is very bright
    • depth is over-estimated, that is where waters becomes clearer than assumed
GREEN solution   vs   PAN solution

GREEN solution   vs   PAN solution
for Profile Purple
Waters are far from homogeneous
!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Blue-pink: isolated very bright pixels/patches, possibly of clean coral sands
  • Brown: topograhic highs, probably coral/seaweed covered hard bottom

Retrieved depth is too deep over the ridge

TCC BOA, water column corrected
  • reddish areas signal waters contaminated in the yellow-red range by slightly turbid coastal waters

LIDAR/4SM comparison

  • GOOD: results are obviously good in the surrounding of Pole Ojea.
  • BAD: retrieved depths are badly underestimated at La Parguera Marine Reserve and off the city of Mayaguez.
  • Access to the LIDAR image has helped me a lot to understand/decipher this situation.

Seatruth on depths
retrieved by Hernandez et al. from a WV2 image

Jmse 04 00008 g010 1024

This is area located in the surrounding of Pole Ojea.
Hernandez et al. had to go through atmospheric correction,
and
used the LIDAR data to calibrate their very special "second order polynomial equation" method.
We want to see such seatruth regression over the yellow study site.
4SM work clearly obtained good results in this area,
using just the image and Jerlov's data.
I wish I could work on this WV2 image!
